G-Shaft candy originated in Braidwood, Illinois in the late 1800's. Harriet and William Williamson came to Braidwood in 1872, where William worked as a hoisting engineer at the Chicago & Wilmington Coal Company's "I" shaft. Tragedy struck in September of 1881 when William died from injuries sustained when the engine house roof collapsed.

His initial reaction was it was a pornotroll, but a quick google found a sober serious explanation of G-Shaft Candy origins in a coal mine tragedy in our region.
