Classification society DNV has added 18 LNG-powered ships to its Alternative Fuels Insight platform in December. In total, 130 LNG-powered vessels were ordered last year, down from 222 in 2022. DNV said that a total of 298 ships with alternative fuel propulsion were ordered in 2023 - an 8 percent increase compared to the last year.

The latest stats from DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform found that a total of 298 ships with alternative fuel propulsion were ordered in 2023 - an 8% increase year on year. The year also saw methanol go mainstream, with a sharp increase in orders (138), putting it neck and neck with LNG (130). Additionally, 2023 marked a breakout year for ammonia, with 11 orders for vessels.

Classification society DNV on Friday (2 September) said the total number of ships with alternative fuels ordered in 2022 was 275 (excluding battery operated vessels), according to the 2022 round up of order figures from its Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform. DNV said LNG led the way with 222 ships or 81 % of total orders.
